About Trainer - Joey Houtekamer: I am Joey Houtekamer of Manteca, CA. As a kid I had limited exposure to horses and horseback riding - doing a little at a local stable, tagging along after my older sister -- wishing I was bigger and could have my own horse. Finally, now in my twenties...and a bit "bigger" I have had the opportunity to ride and learn training techniques. In the past two years I have been following and learning training techniques (Clinton Anderson's method) under the supervision of Mindy Konradi. Last year I was lucky enough to be given a colt to put my training to the test...and have had great results. I couldn't wait to have the chance to get involved in horse rescue and participate in the competition put on by the Horse Plus Humane Society. If you are looking for someone to train your horse in a gentle humane way please don't hesitate to contact me at 209-481-5053

About Horse - Roscoe: Joey says- "Roscoe is a 3 year old wild horse rescued from slaughter. He seems to be gentle in nature....and eager to please. He seems as excited to see me everyday to start training as I am! Hopefully Roscoe, with my training will become a gentle riding horse for my Mom when the competition is complete."

Picture Update:  6-18-14: Wow! My last update! This week has been about preparing for the final show. Clipping Roscoe, having his hooves trimmed and a visit to Moore Equine & K9 Acuscope & Myopulse Therapy. Judy was kind enough to donate a wellness visit for Roscoe so he would be feeling at his very best for the final show! Thank you Judy for your sponsorship! Roscoe enjoyed the therapy. There were wires hooked up all over his body and he was not concerned about them at all. He looked so relaxed and comfortable during the whole treatment. Thank you to our sponsors Elk Grove Milling, Select The Best and Redmond Minerals Roscoe is looking so healthy. He has the shiniest coat and a big fat belly!

Video Update:   6-18-14: I have been hauling Roscoe to the local arena to practice our freestyle. The arena is much larger than the one we have and more like the size of the one at Camelot. I am so happy with his work ethic the last week, he has really stepped it up and is nailing all of our freestyle. Thank you Horse Plus for your efforts in this program and to help horses. Roscoe has turned out to be an amazing horse and he started with a very uncertain fate. Now, he is promised nothing but love, kindness and all the Stable Mix he desires..... See you all at the final show!

Picture Update:  6-11-14: This week Roscoe and I were lucky enough to get to meet one of the other competitors in the Extreme Rescue Makeover. We got to meet Cheyenne and her horse Lil Brother and I most say she is doing great with that little guy. He is so cute and so willing to do anything she asks of him. Cheyenne and I got to ride together at one of my favorite places Deangelis Ranch where Roscoe and Lil Brother did so well together.

Video Update:   6-11-14:  This week Roscoe and I went on a trail ride at New Hogan Reservoir with some friends.  It was the first trail ride for one of the horses so Roscoe was the lead horse for the group.  He did well and we had a lot of fun!  We recorded most of the ride with a video camera which was attached to the top of Mindy's helmet!  All in all it was a great day....and of course, thanks to Mindy for wearing the helmet cam!

Picture Update:  6-4-14: This week Roscoe and I got to ride around with Daisy (Last years winning horse) and her owner Colleen. Daisy was nice enough to share her trailer with Roscoe and teaching him that there is nothing to fear about a two horse straight load. We work on loading and unloading out of the two horse trailer and Roscoe did amazing. By the end of the day Roscoe was going in and coming out with ease.

Video Update:   6-4-14: This week Roscoe and I went to the Gymkhana at the San Joaquin Valley Rangers. We participated in 3 events Polls 1, Key hole, and Quad Rangel. Roscoe did very well in all three events but he made a lot improvement doing polls 1. He started out a little hesitant around the polls but at the end he got his confidence back and weaved in and out of them with no problem. Thank you to our sponsor Serina Lee.

Picture Update:  5-28-14: This week, Roscoe and I accomplished a lot.  His greatest accomplishment was on Monday when he learned to jump over barrels.  This was a new experience for both of us.  We started off with some ground work with a lead rope.  He quickly understood what I wanted him to do and began jumping the barrels in quick order.  After about ten or fifteen minutes, I got in the saddle.  Not only was jumping over an obstacle a first for Roscoe, it was a first for me too.  Roscoe was a bit nervous, but we were persistent and were clearing the barrels in no time!

Video Update:   5-28-14: This week Roscoe and I went to what we like to call the horse playground (Deangelis Ranch). It is a really fun place to help train your horse. They have just about every obstacle you could ever come across to desensitize your horse with. Roscoe did very well with most of the obstacles and we both cant wait till we go back.

Picture Update:  5-22-14: This week I took Roscoe to the San Joaquin Valley Rangers to participate in the Gymkhana Seires. Roscoe and I did all six of the events, Poles 2, Speed barrels, Speed ball, Figure 8 stake, Big T, and Barrels. He did excellent in the warm up area with all the other riders running pass and going opposite directions. It was great to finally getting to expose him to a gymkhana event. I am working on him for the final show, getting our freestyle together and exposing him to things that I think he will experience while we are there. Special thanks to Cynthia Rond for taking the photos of Roscoe at the Gymkhana.

Video Update:   5-22-14: This week I have been very busy, keeping Roscoe in shape and continuing his training. He did fantastic on our trail ride, he was in the front and he was way in the back without any issues. There were birds flying out of bushes and he never got spooked. We hauled him there and back in a two horse straight load that he loaded into easily. He is standing tied to the trailer without any issues when the other horses that he knows leaves. He used to rear up and call for them. Now he is just patient enjoying his break by the trailer.

Picture Update:  5-13-14: Roscoe has been making amazing progress. I am getting him used to going to different places and being ridden. He had so much fun when we got to the ranch. He played stretched his legs after the long trailer ride. He was so brave with all of the new stimulus, over creeks and riding by himself. I am excited for the final show, it is less than 40 days away so we are preparing our ride. Practicing the pattern that we will be performing. He is doing great with everything and he makes me so happy to be around him.

Video Update:  5-13-14: This week Roscoe went to The 7M Ranch, home of one of our sponsors. We camped there for four nights and he did amazing. He was perfect on the trail ride and the days that I worked him in the round pen at the ranch. I took him in the lake and he loved the water! I took him away from the rest of the horses and he didnt mind at all! Kept doing his work like he should do. He hauled in the trailer great on the way there and on the way home. There are quite a few wild turkeys on the property and I came around a corner on the trail and a turkey flew away making a good amount of noise. Roscoe was not even phased.

Picture Update:  5-8-14: I am trying to introduce Roscoe to all kinds of stimulus. On this day he was doing usual Roscoe behavior. Investigating everything with his mouth. He can be so funny at times, standing in his water trough, holding things in his mouth, taking my wallet out of my pocket.... I am excited to take him on his first camping trip to trail ride in the mountains. I can't wait to see how he does!

Video Update:  5-8-14: This week i introduced Roscoe to pulling objects. This was his very first time doing this and I was thrilled with his reaction. He was great about it and was so curious about the rope that he was biting it and pulling it around. I worked with the tarp and have been focusing on building his confidence in New things I ask him to do. I'm thrilled with how he looks with a shiny coat and filling out thanks to our sponsors Elk grove Milling, Redmond rock, Select The Best.

Picture Update:  4-30-14: Roscoe Has been a joy to work with. Everyday seems to be better then the last. I look forward to going out and work with him everyday and the days I don't get to make it out just feel so empty. It feels like every time we are together Roscoe has me laughing at how cute he can be or he will have me feeling so proud over how amazing he is doing.

Picture Update: 4-23-14: This week we have been hitting on just about everything. We went back to the beginning and touched up on some ground work and we played a little bit more with the cowboy curtain. Everyday is a little different from the last when it comes to the cowboy curtain. Some days the winds will be calm and it will barley move. Other days the winds will be blowing it around like crazy which makes for great training.

Video Update: 4-23-14: This week Roscoe got to go to a new place with a lot going on. We went to the San Joaquin Valley Rangers for an Easter play day. we participated in many events like poles 1 and 2, barrels, and hurry scurry. Roscoe was a little nervous when we first got there but after putting him to work for a bit he did excellent. Also this week I took Roscoe out for a short stroll around the neighborhood. There was a lot of stimulation from the dogs barking at us, some cars driving by, and from all the neighbor kids playing around.

Picture Update: 4-16-14: This week we finally got to put together Roscoe's new shelter made by one of his awesome sponsor North Coast Barns. He is very happy now that he has more shade to be able to get out of the sun. Recently I have caught Roscoe having a little to much fun in his water troth. I had been wondering how his water would be so low after just filling it up a few minutes before.

Video Update: 4-16-14: This week Roscoe and I worked on some more lead changes, 2 tracking, and also side passing. We also did some work on desensitizing to different objects including a cowboy curtain. Everyday Roscoe seem to just get better and better. You can really tell he is eager to learn. I taught he a great little trick to move his butt over to the fence so it is easier to get on.

Picture Update: 4-9-14: I am thrilled with the results from Stable Mix, Nu Image and Redmond Red! His coat is so red and smooth, his color is getting more and more vibrant! His hooves look amazing! He is so easy to ride, I love that he is stopping off my seat, yielding to leg cues and neck reins so well already! I am going to have him trimmed again next week as he is due. He has been great about picking up his feet to let me clean them out. I couldn't be more pleased with him and all his effort.

Video Update: 4-9-14: This week I have been working on side passing, two tracking, backing, roll backs, spins lead departures and lead changes. He is doing great! It has been hot and he loves to play in his water so I am anxious to take him to a lake and let him play in the water because I think that he is really going to like it. He loves being hosed off after I ride him each day, he even tries to play with the hose with his mouth. He is making great progress in his training and has done alot of growing in the last couple weeks, He is so much taller than when we picked him up just a short two moths ago.

Picture Update: 4-2-14: This week Roscoe and I had to deal with inclement weather.  One day, the wind was moving things around which made for great stimulus training.  It took him a little bit of time to collect himself, but he was a champ once he did. On another day, we rode in the rain. It had been overcast for several hours and sprinkled lightly before the skies opened and down it came.  It poured for quite a while, but it didn't seem to phase Roscoe at all!

Video Update: 4-2-14: This week I put splint boots on Roscoe for the first time. He did way better than I was expecting. After I put them on him and asked him to walk, he paid little to no attention to them. By the time I got on him, both he and I forgot they were even on.   I also worked on desensitizing Roscoe to plastic bags on the ground.  He didn't seem to care for them at first, but soon became comfortable with the bags being close to him.

Picture Update: 3-25-14: Roscoe is doing amazing, he is so calm and willing that he is just a pleasure to be around. He has so much trust in me that anything that I ask him to do he is willing to do. We are beginning to work on more complex training like the lead changes, yielding hind quarters and forequarters. I have been picking his feet daily and hosing him down after rides and he is perfect at it. I am so glad that this horse is going to work out for my mom to ride, I feel like she will be safe on him and he is going to teach her so much. He truly is a great horse and I cant wait to see the to of them hit the trail together!

Video Update: 3-25-14: After a long vacation Roscoe got right back to work where I left off. He looks so good from all the green grass out in the pasture! He is getting taller by the minute and his color changes by the hour! This week I took him to a friends house to practice some of the fundamental exercises from Downunder Horsemanship. He did everything just as I asked him to and even went thru the obstacle course. On this day the cowboy curtain was very scary because the wind made it move but after a few minuets of pressure and release he was comfortable and walking thru it. The bridge was not an issue at all, he has so much trust and is so willing. He is loading into the trailer like a pro and you never hear a sound out of him once he is in there. No calling, no pawing or kicking.

He allowed me to walk all the way up to him to get this picture and to pet him for a bit. Thank you to our new sponsors Julie Ball, Bob Ball, Butch and Jackie Mitchell, Irene and Albert Houtekamer, and Georgette Somera. Last Weekend I took a 3 day clinic with certified Clinton Anderson clinician Chris Webb. I learned so much from it and can't wait to try out all the new things I learned on Roscoe.

Video Update: 3-19-14: This week Roscoe was still off in the pasture enjoying his vacation. He loves to run around and play with his pasture mate Nugget. He picks his feet up well for me to clean them and loves his bath time. He lets me spray his whole body and wash his mane and tail. He is looking better and better each day with his coat shedding out and getting really soft. He is going to be coming home Saturday and he will continue training as usual.

Picture Update: 3-12-14: This week included Roscoe's 30th day with me. We are taking pictures every 30 days to see how much he changes physically in this short amount of time with a healthy diet. His coat is already shinier and he is filling out so well. His coat is shedding and he has lost most of his course hair. I gave him a bridal path and clipped him up, he has a skin infection on the top of his head so I am treating it with a medicated gel. He is chewing his food much better, earlier he was leaving lots of ground up food. Now, he is eating all of it leaving behind very little mess.

Video Update: 3-10-14: This week was vacation for Roscoe! I feel like he needs to do some growing and my friend Mindy Konradi let me turn him out in her pasture. I knew that he would be excited to be turned out, in the arena he has a blast, so on 3 acres of lush green grass I expected him to have a field day! He ate grass, he ran around in it he rolled in it and loved every second. He has a stall that he can go into with hay and Stable Mix but we never see him in there, I am thrilled that he is so happy. His coat is shedding already from the grass, the new hair is so smooth and glossy. I took him on his first trail ride down the road with cars. Never bothered him a bit, he was too distracted by all the grass that was growing in the orchards. He is easy to catch even when he is in the pasture and has tons of room to run away from me.

Video Update: 3-4-14: During our fifth week with Roscoe we moved him over to a snaffle bit. The transition went very smoothly and I am very impressed with his progress. He is leg and neck reining very well, stopping and backing off my seat without me having to use reins. I find that I can get a lot of training done on trail rides, leaving the group, working over natural obstacles. He is more confident after each ride. On the way to this ride we had a flat tire so we pulled into a parking lot to change the tire. Roscoe stood tied to the trailer for over 45 minuets because the spare had a bad valve stem and it took a bit of time to replace that. After the tires were replaced Roscoe jumped right into the trailer. He is standing tied while we give him a bath and pick his feet. Our farrier is coming out today to trim him so we have been working on him standing with one foot off the ground for long periods of time. Thank you to all of our amazing sponsors!

Picture Update: 2-25-14: This week has been awesome for Roscoe! The rain has made things muddy around here but I was able to take him to a covered arena and ride with a group of people. He was comfortable in the group and made a ton of progress although it was very windy outside and it made strange loud noises in the arena. He is backing out of the trailer so nicely, he is standing calmly tied. I find that he learns alot on the trail rides and he really enjoys them. I will try to take him once a week or every other week. This week was at our sponsor's property Gann Land & Cattle co. This was perfect for me to ride him away from the group and he was so comfortable alone and never called to the other horses or hurried to catch up.

Video Update: 2-12-14: This week we had really bad weather, so we took Roscoe to an indoor arena. There were tons of distractions and noises from people, horses and the weather. He was nervous at first but after our ground exercises he calmed right down and we got to work. He, along with many of the horses there that day, attempted to lay down under saddle. I let him commit to this mistake and then made it uncomfortable for him. After two times he quickly got the point and didn't try it again. I took him to the vet, we were concerned about his teeth. He leaves a lot of ground up food in the bottom of his feeder and he had warts that he needed a vaccination for. On a dare, I decided to ride him bareback and bridaless. To everyone's surprise he was perfect, proof that he has a great amount of trust in me. It is the foundation of our relationship.  5 points

He has no issues with us touching him all over his body and I can pick up his front and back feet. I have had several rides in the round pen and were able to walk, trot and canter him on his first ride under saddle.

This week Roscoe made a ton of progress. He loaded into the trailer, is leading perfectly, I rode him bareback, he was saddled and ridden on his first trail ride. He did awesome on the trail ride, he was calm and traveled in the front of the pack and in the back. It was a perfect first trail, there were two other seasoned horses to help keep him calm. The footing is nice and soft and there were no other riders on the trail. I also rode him bareback and bridal less around the round pen, he has so much trust in me that this was no issue for him and he comfortably responded to all of my ques..

Video Update: 1-28-13: Sunday I picked Roscoe up from Horse Plus. The trailer loading and the trip home went very smoothly. After getting him home we let him have a good break and began his training. I was able to halter him and began leading him by the first day. We spent quite a bit of time in the round pen and moved to the arena.  At this point we are going to try to build a sold foundation in our relationship. He is very willing and has made great improvements already. I have exposed him to the tarp and the obstacle course, both he showed a lot of interest in. Next week I plan to saddle and ride and start trailering him to new places to get him some exposure. Please like Roscoe's Facebook Fan page so you can follow his progress with regular updates.  5 points

Picture Update: 1-28-14:
Sunday was pick up day, after a long drive I was the first in line to pick out my horse. I had a couple of friends take the drive with me to get multiple opinions about the horses. I felt an instant connection with Gelden, he was moved to the round pen and I made my choice. He loaded into the trailer without any issues and was so quiet on the ride home. The first thing he did as soon as he was unloaded into the round pen was roll! He seemed to enjoy the sand and laid there for quite some time. I began round pen work after a break to rest from the trip and within 30 minuets I was able to put the halter on him. I decided before we arrived home that I would keep this horse and decided to choose a new name for him. I decided on Roscoe.
