About Trainer - Courtney Clifford: As a young child, horses were always fascinating to Courtney. After many crushed childhood dreams of having a steed, finally she got her first very own horse while also working with a riding instructor to learn about horse training methods. Anytime she wasn't spending a day at the barn Courtney was wishing to be there, surrounded by horses. Being given the opportunity in later years, she started helping and teaching others to discover the potential in their own horses. Whether correcting problem horses or starting colts, her philosophy is simple; "Expect, Get, Reward." Through clear and precise communication Courtney strives for excellence in training horses and individuals. Whether you need an arena or trail horse started or tuned, located in Sacramento, CA for any training needs; call 916-741-2543

About Horse - Ace: From the first time I worked Ace, I had hunch he would be a joy to work with. From day one he showed me how quick and willing he was to learn, he is brave and fearless. He completely charmed me! There was something about Ace that just caught my eye, and I see it now that I've had the pleasure to work with him more. Courageous, personable, the list just goes on. There's some days where I almost truly wonder if he really was "wild" before we met. He blossoms more and more every day that I get to spend time with him, I can't wait to see how he'll turn out. Ace will be available for adoption after the competition is complete.

Video Update:  6-18 -14
: I should have named him Brave, because that’s what he is. Ace got to see a little tiny trail course, after getting over the initial surprise factor of all these weird things, he put his little hooves to work and tried his best. We did the best we could and came out on top, learning even more about what we need to work together on.

Picture Update:  6-18-14: Ace got turned out in the large arena this week, after rolling (which is his favorite activity!) He wandered the fence line, in hopes that I would soon come rescue him! I couldn’t help but capture the look on his face when I finally did come over his direction. He wanted to be with me, and I couldn’t have been more flattered =)

Video Update:  6-14-14: Ace is doing well in a bigger riding area now, he was really excited with all the open space. Although we were caught up in the moment, and didn't capture it on camera, Ace did well meeting some children this week! They were very excited to learn more about where he came from and quite shocked that horses could have blue eyes!

Picture Update:  6-14-14: Throughout all the time me and Ace spend together, we've learned a lot more about each other and developed a wonderful bond. Sometimes it’s hard to tell him no while I'm trying to train him because he is just SO cute! (and I think he knows it..) I have completely loved watching him blossom into his own special personality.

Video Update:  6-5 -14: Introducing Ace, the all around Mustang! There are goats on the property and what better than for him to be a working horse and push them around!? He did very good pushing these little rambunctious creatures around. He impressed me, that’s for sure.  He pushed the whole herd very well, while also being able to go after the stragglers.

Picture Update:  6-5-14: Ranch horse!? It fits. Ace is great at pushing goats around, and I can only wonder about cows or horses. He's picked up the idea rather quickly. Though food is still of more importance over chasing the goats around in his book, at the end of the day, mustang gets the job done! With a bit of practice, he was doing quite well.

Video Update:  5-30 -14: Ace is doing so well under saddle, he is learning to move his whole body and is doing well at fine tuning each and every request, slowly but surely. He continues to learn about the release of pressure and more of what I try asking of him. He's easy going and tries his best to do what I ask, as he understands.

Picture Update:  5-30-14: With Ace under saddle now, I feel like we're a team, more than we have ever been before! He really tries to please me and listen to my requests, and I really try to tell him what I need him to do as best I know how. Even though we still run into "the learning curve" at times, I'm proud to say we always end on a good note.

Video Update:  5-23 -14: Although mustangs find water in the wild so they can survive, and it's life to them... When it is coming out of a hose in a cold powerful stream or spray-- the story changes. After practicing this, Ace now thinks very little of the whole event. He's sure impressive when compared to the domestic horses I've seen that try to dance around a water hose stream!

Picture Update:  5-23-14: Ace gets to stand, a lot.. He get bored standing all too quickly too often and starts making a fuss about it. Hoping we'll be able to fix that sooner than later. I'd like to say he may be small, but he's built like a tank.. yet this picture shows all too true of what is the real case, he's a narrow little man, but I sure can vouch that he's a tough as nails proud MUSTANG!!

Video Update:   5-15-14:  Sometimes the progress in training horses seems so subtle, and other times. It seems so visible! Last time Ace was in a trailer, he was loaded from the shoot as he ran like a scared chicken into it. Thankfully his opinion of trailers has changed since his first encounter with picking him up. He’s such a willing soul, and I will say, practice has paid off, once again!

Picture Update:  5-15-14: I love hanging out on the back of Ace, it really reminds me of where we've come from.. and where we're headed, as long as I can stay on! I love how this photo also shows his gorgeous mane, its light and dark brown, be it from the sun or natural, I'm still infatuated =)

Video Update:   5-12-14: Although this video might not be the best quality, thankfully it doesn't say anything about the quality of my rides on this little cutie! We're taking things at Ace's speed, and he's doing wonderful. Saddle work is a whole different cup of tea for him than what we have done in the past. Even so, he has been good to work with thus far!

Picture Update:  5-12-14: Ace has slowly learned to trust me, but what poses as another obstacle, is trusting others, who are not me... We had a visit from a sponsor who helped him out with his fear! With enough time, Ace catches on nicely! Especially when he gets to meet nice people who he can trust!

Video Update:   5-1-14: After much progress, had to show off Ace's skills! The first time I brushed or saddled Ace, he wasn't standing quiet like the horse you see in the video. I'm so proud to say this boy WAS wild, but now he's changed, for the better and the rest of his life. Everything that once appeared so scary to him is now just "regular" life, I couldn't be more proud of him. Way to go bud! <3

Picture Update:  5-1-14: Ace has been getting practice with his saddle, mainly that just because he has a saddle on, doesn't mean he is going to get exercised. He's so smart. To keep from losing his willingness to work, standing tied has proved valuable to helping him wait for whatever is next. --Even though he might not be the most photogenic horse!

Video Update: 4-24-14: Ace has done so well thus far, and all the training we've accomplished together has finally started to feel like its paid off. He is learning to be responsive more and more every day. With a solid foundation set, its a complete pleasure to now, at last, be on his back! Mounting him is much easier than taller horses I'm used to, but I like having the stirrup within easy reach.

Picture Update: 4-24-14: One of the aspects that Ace loves about domestic horse life is getting grain! This is his common "I'd love to have some" face, whenever I pull the grain out I get this look! He's such a curious little guy. Although the first time I gave him a carrot he readily accepted/tried it, he now chooses to spit them out every time I offer him one! Thus, we stick to grain.

Video Update: 4-17-14: Ace keeps proving to me how willing he is to learn the ropes of a domestic horse, this week we continued to work with his saddle but, the highlight is shown on video. We have been using water to practice “fly spraying” for the future need to keep the pesky critters away, and also picking up his feet so his hooves can be cleaned out, and stand quietly for the farrier on 3 legs.

Picture Update: 4-17-14: Sometimes its hard to take pictures of things that you see, because half the time when you go grab your camera.. the moment has passed. This kept happening when I tried to show Ace, just chilling out, completely relaxed! Until.. I finally succeeded, I love his posture here, it is so calm as he patiently waits for whatever is next.

Video Update: 4-10-14: This week has been exciting, I couldn't be more thrilled that Ace is now horsing around with his saddle on his back!  He's still getting used to the feel of the cinch around his belly and the flopping stirrups, but he's very level headed in how he reacts to things. We've been focusing on lounging this week, he's doing much better and really has learned to move out nicely! Can't wait to be working him off his back.

Picture Update: 4-10-14: A good part of the week we were rained out again of working on things, so we took shelter in the barn and hung out. The rain and wind sure didn't phase this little guy, but it does phase his human counterpart! He spent some time greeting his fellow barn mates and munching on hay from my hand, which he didn't do when I got him! I love to see him keep progressing.

Video Update: 4-3-14: Ace is now a saddle horse! Okay, so maybe still in the making.. but, he took his first saddling like a champ. He was very calm about it being on his back as he was lead around to get familiar. Seems like all the hard work is paying off, and we're finally seeing results! Can't wait to see where this is going to take us. Off to de-spooking again.

Picture Update: 4-3-14:  Well, the grass is more than growing around here, so.. I brought Ace out to play lawnmower as he was still getting used to his new tack. Eventually he became comfortable enough to start mowing! He's very aware of his new tack, yet he still acts as if he has nothing on him. Couldn't be more proud of him!

Video Update: 3-26-14: Ace gained lots of exposure to obstacles that he may see later on in his life, time and time again. From flappy, loud, wet or unexpected, he did great while stay calm and quiet like a complete seasoned veteran horse. Here he crosses through moving water for the first time and even stops for a drink.

Picture Update: 3-26-14: Ace has been like a blossoming flower recently, just when he shows off what he knows.. Then he reaches above and beyond everything I expect of him, it is amazing. He likes meeting new horses and ponies! He wasn't scared of the small ponies at all, and he even stood still when he got to meet a goat who was very loud - So fearless!

Video Update: 3-6-14: Ace is coming along well, he loves to follow me around and get pet all over. He has been learning how to move his body parts, either forward or back and side to side. This video really displays how calm and relaxed he can be. He likes to work and is always trying his best to do what you want. I couldn't be happier!

Picture Update: 3-6-14: Ace at his best here, with all the rain we decided to catch some large puddles. After working with him for a little while, he was gladly following me anywhere I would go, water or not. On one of our laps through the puddles, Ace was completely comfortable with slamming his feet through the water, enough to even splash me! I see a great trail horse in the making!

Video Update: 2-26-14: Here we are only 14 days into spending time together, and I can only say he is trusting more and more. If he gets scared, he keeps looking to me for guidance and the correct answers. This “wild mustang” is a only a mere trusting pony now, every step he makes is very intentional and he’s learning the domesticated ropes quickly!

Picture Update: 2-26-14:  Lots of trust has been built here, we're creating a solid foundation as I help him learn about domestic horse life. He loves being around the other horses, even though they’re trained and much more acclimated to humans than this little guy is. I have yet to measure him, but I think he might be only 13 something hands tall. Ace has started getting extra food and supplements to fatten him up for domestic horse standards! –Oh, and he’s loving it!

Video Update: 2-17-14: After loading him in the squeeze chute, the gate opened as he mindlessly ran into the trailer to hitch a ride home. This clip shows how nervous and scared he was while he was waiting for the trip home. Soon enough he'll learn what trailers are really about and how handy they are, can't wait!

Picture Update: 2-17-14:  Ace is adjusting to domesticated horse life at his own pace, he loves being right next to the other more experienced horses any chance he gets. He is learning about leading and how a halter works to help him listen. He’s always trying and eager to give you his best.
